Professor (emeritus) of education at Tel Aviv University where he held the Branco Weiss Chair for Research in Child Development and Education. During the two terms he served as the chairman of the Department of Child Development and Education at Tel Aviv University's School of Education, he established various educational programs. Prof. Strauss is the Chief Scientist at the Ministry of Education. His main topics of research focus upon cognitive and educational development, children's development of teaching skills, adults' mental models of children's thought and learning, and the manifestation of these models in how adults teach and discuss their instruction. Prof. Strauss is a member of the US National Academy of Education. He holds a Ph.D. in scientific education from the University of California, Berkeley.

Prof. Strauss was a member of the Initiative for Applied Education Research's steering committee from 2006 to 2008.
